Fiscal Sponsor Organizations

  • 1.  DBA?

Have any of you utilized a DBA for some of your projects? In particular because of the IRA required minimum distribution law, we are getting more checks made out directly to FSOs. The companies writing these checks aren’t doing the research to see how checks should be made out, so they come made out to the FSO and not us. We are considering a DBA for several of FSOs that get a lot of checks to alleviate this, but are wondering if we are missing the downsides of this. (Also any other solutions you have found to the IRA check challenge is welcome.)

we have a dba for our organization as a whole and managing the multiple registrations and communicating the identity of the organization gets much more difficult.

We are lucky that Mazlo’s banking partners are aware of the fiscal sponsor structure and will accept checks made out to our FSO’s. Prior to Mazlo, we would liberally reject checks made out incorrectly and hammer it to projects that they had to effectively communicate their tax status to their founders. It was a harsh and annoying policy but ultimately the only way.

@Harry Meltzer I would think this is the way to go in terms of not looking like a pass through? Do you have model A or model C for this?

Truthfully, we don’t distinguish between the models. For our purposes, it’s all the same, and all the same expense policies apply.

We do a DBA for each of our programs once we receive the first check payable to a program’s name. Mercury Bank has been great allowing us to add an unlimited amount of DBAs to our account while most other’s only allow one.

@Amanda LaFleur We have a regional bank that we adore. They seriously came out and met with us for almost 2 hours last week just to touch base and make sure we were taking advantage of all the programs and security features they have. They would definitely let us do this.
