    Hi Everyone - We haven’t seen much in the news about this, but think it’s important that this community is aware of it:

    Last week, GoFundMe created over 1.4 million donation pages for nonprofits — without asking.

    A few important points to take note of:

    • The company scraped IRS data, flipped a switch, and decided these organizations now have fundraising pages that they never requested.

    • These pages have been set up with a default 16.5% “tip” (money that goes to GoFundMe - unless donors notice the fine print and manually slide to adjust it).

    • If left up, these pages very likely may cause confusion among donors.

    • If anyone does donate through these pages, the default is for GoFundMe to mail the net donation (via check) to the nonprofit within 3-5 months.

    ps. Thankfully, since they used the IRS database, it seems like only fiscal sponsors may be affected — not their projects.

    Yep, I just posted on LinkedIn about this. They created a page for us that we now have to figure out how to disable. I also emailed GoFundMe directly about this too, because this isn’t ok!

    Thanks for sharing !Andrew! I had seen some stuff on LinkedIn about this but the link you shared was the most informative on how to get this “fixed” if we want to. So crazy that they just did this

    Thank you, Andrew. This is a very helpful article. I found GFM has done the same thing to us and used the information in the article to begin the recovery process. I’ve claimed our organization and am awaiting verification.

    Looks like this is something similar (not sure if these pages are all public or just waiting to be “claimed,” but something to check out). Thanks to @Whitney Cook for pointing this out.

    I tested it out and was able to donate to a nonprofit that didn’t have an admin attached.

    While obviously all of this is bad, my biggest concern is this is outdated information. We used to have a different name with a slightly different mission. Our old name appears on every.org. Does this mean money donated to that page should go to us? I’d bet there are nonprofits that no longer exist on here too.
