Fiscal Sponsor Organizations

Is it common for our nonprofit insurance providers to charge a set up fee for each new fiscally project we add?

NIAC let me know that they view each new project as it's own nonprofit before deciding to add it as a supplement to our policy. We are charged $200 per additional project. We operate as if our projects are one and the same as our organization and it simply a program of our core mission.

When I ran a traditional nonprofit, I did not need to notify our insurance if we added programs that has like activities the speak to our core mission. Why are they looking at us differently? Any ideas or are you seeing this as well?

    Thanks!

Community Initiatives works with NIAC as well and charges us for each additional project.

Yes, this is my experience as well with multiple insurers at different fiscal sponsors. While a standalone nonprofit might not necessarily have to get all new programs added to their insurance policy, there probably would be an added cost if they added a new location, or if operations changed substantially. They are listing all the projects and all their locations on the policy, so I think that's more how they think of it. The good news is that, they should also reduce your cost on a prorated basis if a project closes or exits as well.

Thank you both so much for responding. I was feeling frustrated and alone but it does make sense. Boo

Underwriters/carriers typically consider insuring fiscal sponsors to cost them more administratively because of endorsing/adding individual projects. A fee is better than non-renewal because they don’t think it’s worth their time though…
