Fiscal Sponsor Organizations

    Hello-

I have spent the past 10 months in an insurance review process with our broker with the hopes of getting our long-standing coverages assessed and hopefully increased. We were told only NIA was willing to take us into underwriting (in November), and they have just come back to confirm they will ONLY cover “a premises-only general liability quote. That would mean that they cannot provide coverage for any operations outside of office-only slip, trip, and fall claims.”

Our broker said “I am very sorry, but I think we are at the end of the line and I have no other markets.”

My org does still have coverges for general liability through Valley Forge Insurance Co. through August, along with the full suite of coverages elsewhere, but I don’t think they have taken a close look at our operations in years and I sense that is what this rejection is tied to. The actual work our projects due is quite anodyne (eg no organized protests, minimal advocacy, no lawsuits, etc).

I have seen a lot of sidebar conversations about people’s challenges with insurance companies but has anyone else experienced this type of blanket “uninsurability?”

Are there any FS conversations or resources on insurance in this current environment that I could review as we plan?

And is anyone covering nonprofit insurance challenges outside of insurance trade publications? It seems like there’s a story there if NGOs are becoming like Miami condos in terms of insurance risk…

May I ask the size of your organization? We haven’t been told we are uninsurable, but we have been told that our current insurance company, Philadelphia, is our only option and also that they aren’t taking on any new fiscal sponsors as clients. So it leaves us extremely uneasy because it seems as though they could just change their minds at any time. We are also concerned with costs, which have been rising steeply. We have been researching alternatives such as setting up an insurance captive. What we are finding is that we will likely need to come together with other organizations if we are to find a solution. So we’ve been thinking about the best way to try and find such peers (perhaps such as your org?). I also recommend reaching out to Lauren Erickson at Relation Insurance. Lauren is a broker with specific interest in fiscal sponsors and may have some ideas for you lauren.erickson@relationinsurance.com

Thank you, Susan! That is all very helpful. They didn’t SAY “uninsurable,” but that seems to be the case. I am now nervous for the renewals of our current coverages based on this, and hoping they just rubberstamp (but I was previously worried about those coverages being insufficient…).

We have a $10M budget and 26 employees and 8 projects (7 Model A and one Model C).

@Kat Norris this makes sense. I think the group captive option might be more feasible for organizations in the $30-$70M range, but I will definitely let you know (if you’re interested) if we get any traction/gather folks to talk about that because you never know. I still recommend reaching out to Lauren because I think she has some “out of the box” thoughts on it. I’m sure the person Asta recommended is also great.

I agree, Kat!!! I have heard from many organizations as they are in search of effective supports lately. Here is the insurance broker that works a lot with fiscal sponsorship community. Maybe they will be a strong resource for you too?
