Liability Insurance for Projects

I am interested to learn if others are experiencing an increase in organizational insurance carriers rejecting certain projects due to their mission?

While it was common that one or two would be turned down annually by our usual insurance carrier, we are seeing an increase in the amount of rejections and it's more difficult to find an alternative carrier for those projects.

Thanks . I know this has affected at least a handful of larger sponsors -- and I'm guessing it's affecting even more than that. This would make for a great working group -- and whoever is interested, please just comment below and let us know.

We haven't experienced this yet but appreciate the heads up! You've raised my awareness of shopping around for insurers for specific projects that our current policy won't cover.

Thank you for raising this Jennifer. I am curious to know what other sponsors are experiencing and any solutions they have found with underwriters that have a lower risk tolerance.

I'm wondering if other orgs are experiencing some version of this issue?

Our insurance overall did not really go up much (renewed 6 months ago) and it seems our broker and underwriter are pretty okay with risk. Im not CRAZY about our broker but I do think its super imporant to have a broker who understands your work and will advocate for you!

I have had insurance say "no" once in the past for a project that was going to involve bicycle racing.... They pretty much just said that Bicycles are way too risky for head injury so there was no way

We're having a difficult time with insurance as well. We're finding that projects engaging in advocacy/allowable c3 lobbying are being rejected out of hand due to "political activities." This is infuriating as this is how our humble democracy is supposed to work... we're also experiencing challenges with worker's compensation. We have begun exploring "captive" insurance and self-insuring. Happy to share more when we know more.

Thanks for sharing these two alternatives. I started educating myself on these two options but at surface level. For self insurance you hold money aside, right? What about when the project has a funder that requires a certificate of insurance, that seems like a challenge to this option.

We had one project with a flight program that our insurance would not cover in air time, we were able to cover it by having the Parter airline organization cover the in air time. The program also got each participant their own pilot insurance. We are seeing increases over all in our insurance costs.

This is a real concern that we are seeing turndowns more frequently and with little guidance from the brokers on where we should seek other providers.

FYI - we've scheduled two insurance experts to join an upcoming session of the FS Conversations on Tuesday, 9/26. One is Colleen Lazanich who has joined us before and the other is Brian Johnson. Both real leaders in the field.

They will be talking about general insurance questions/issues but also will spend some time on what it might look like to develop an insurance "captive" for fiscal sponsors. Should be really interesting!
