Hi all, I’ve heard from a credible source that there’s an executive order dropping on Earth Day (!) which among other things somehow will designate climate change work to not be a charitable purpose. If you or your projects work on environmental issues please be prepared for this on Tuesday.

Additionally this EO may also target equivalency determination for foreign NGOs, impacting international grant making.

My relatively credible source thinks they are going to first be targeting large Foundations who support climate issues… for what its worth. So stopping funding at its source.

Trump could remove NGO status for green groups, sources say

Some say potential order is expected on Earth Day

Major environmental groups are guarding against a potential order from President Donald Trump that could strip away their tax-exempt status, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg Law Wednesday.

Multiple environmental and conservation organizations are discussing preparations and assembling legal teams in response to the speculation, according to sources who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity.

“This is going to be focused on climate activism, not environmentalism in general,” according to Kieran Suckling, executive director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

Some say the order—which could also seize funds and designate groups as domestic terrorists—will be released on Earth Day, April 22.

Suckling confirmed the Center is also actively preparing for a potential order, and vows to sue for a temporary restraining order if it comes down. It is unclear whether such an order would survive legal scrutiny.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the federal government to unfreeze billions in climate and infrastructure funds, which Trump froze via executive order on his first day in office.

    Thank you all.

As you may all be experiencing, we are now hearing this from a number of other contacts of our organization, which we consider quite credible.

I have some updated info from another source that there will be five total EOs next week. One targeting the charitable status of work on climate change, the second targeting grantmaking to support activities outside the US, then one each targeting two specific funders. One of the funders is very likely to be Gates according to my source. The other I believe will be either OSF or Ford, but that’s my speculation only. And the 5th EO would end public service loan forgiveness.

@Ariel Cohen - thank you for sharing. I’m sure there will be chilling effects from these but I’d also expect all of these will have legal action contesting them.
