Hi all - anyone have one of these? Would you be willing to share your policy documents and your experience? I would be particularly interested in anyone’s experience who have made the transition from accrued vacation and separate sick leave to unlimited or “self managed” including paying out existing accruals, how you timed the change, how you made the decision, etc.

We are far from the decided on this and in the fact-finding stage. I have long had a personal bias against these policies but we are considering whether this could be the better fit for our org and program. For context have employees in numerous states and currently front load sick leave and accrue and pay out vacation, which has a tenure-based escalator and a “reasonable cap” of 1.5x annual accrual.

    Many thanks!

Hey! Social Good Fund offers an unlimited policy. We have never had an accrual based policy, so I can’t speak to moving from an accrual based policy to an unlimited policy as an organization, but overall, I think it works pretty well for us.

A few things popping up for me:

We kind of have a “goal” for how much time off to aim for during the year (4-5 weeks).

All time off must be approved by managers.

We do still track time off on a shared calendar (to ensure adequate coverage).

We ask for a longer heads up if the time off will exceed one week.

If due to illness, we coordinate time off with our short term disability.

Obviously, the org does not carry this liability on the books, which is helpful from the org’s perspective.

I’ll also share that, throughout time, some departments have expressed that it’s harder to take time off than others, so we’ve tried to navigate that. Let me know if other questions might be popping up!
